Over 3 million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers every year. Precancers, or actinic keratoses, are even more common. Early diagnosis is key. We recommend yearly complete skin exams to check for suspicious moles or other patches. You should also complete monthly self-exams using the ABCDE’s method.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
A slow-growing cancer that starts from the basal cell layer of the skin. A BCC does not turn into any other form of cancer. A BCC can look like a red bump, a scaling pink patch or a waxy growth with rolled edges. Treatment options include ED&C, surgical excision, topical chemotherapy and radiation.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
Not aggressive if caught early but has a slightly higher risk of spreading than a BCC. SCC’s can look like a scaling red patch, an open sore, a thicker wart-like bump or a growth with a central depression. Treatment options include ED&C, surgical excision, topical chemotherapy and radiation.

Melanoma
Arises from your pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Melanoma can develop in your pre-existing moles, but more commonly develops in normal-looking skin. Because they are more curable at early stages, early detection is key. Treatment options include surgical excision, immunotherapy, chemotherapy and radiation.
